YOL on the Peninsula – September 28, 2017

RedwoodSept2017-Header

This special discounted program is designed to showcase YOL’s unique leadership programming and curriculum while offering you and your colleagues a unique opportunity to shed stress, have fun and give back to an incredible organization on a beautiful summer day.

We’ll meet at the Redwood City PAL camp in Redwood City at 8:45 and you’ll learn about YOL’s approach to mindful service and get oriented to the day ahead.

This orientation will be followed with a guided primer on mindful leadership by Zanette Johnson PhD, one of YOL’s esteemed faculty (bio below).

Then, we will apply our intention and focus as we engage with the kids at PAL and begin our volunteer activity. The group will break from our service engagement to enjoy a delicious, organic picnic lunch and conclude the day with a guided meditation before heading home, refreshed and relaxed.

Along the way we’ll also hear from PAL Director Ivan Martinez to learn more about the PAL programs and how they align with their mission to build positive partnerships between youth, police and the community, to prevent juvenile crime, and reduce crimes against youth.

Don’t miss this powerful experience! The cost to attend is just $98/person. Know friends or co-workers who would be interested in joining as well? Register three of your people, and the fourth person will attend for free!

ABOUT REDWOOD CITY PAL
Founded in 1995, P.A.L. is a nonprofit community organization that provides prevention, intervention, and advocacy services to children, youth and families in the low-income community of East Palo Alto. Summer camps fulfill a great need in the community to keep kids and teens safe, active and engaged through June, July and August. Together we will join P.A.L. staff in supporting a variety of camp activities for youth as well as volunteer our time, efforts and energy to engage in projects such as the garden and grounds maintenance.

* Please let us know ASAP if you would like to be part of a carpool from San Francisco. We will do our best to accommodate.

ABOUT OUR FACILITATORS

Zanette Johnson, PhD
Zanette designs learning experiences to facilitate small, powerful workplace changes. Acting at first as an ethnographer, she watches and listens deeply to clients’ challenges; she then responds by testing new practices to stimulate desired growth patterns. She teaches teams adaptive processes that sustain their positive new dynamic over time. Dr. Johnson impacts teams by tinkering at three related levels: the workplace ecosystem, interpersonal interactions, and individual behavior. These meaningful changes garner big returns in terms of employees’ intrinsic satisfaction, engagement, and effectiveness. Zanette holds a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and Religious Studies, a Master’s in Teaching, and a doctoral degree from Stanford University’s “Learning Science and Technology Design” program.

Jackie Richards, MA
A co-founder of YOL, Jackie Richards leads program planning and service engagement.  She is passionate about people and service and has worked with local and international communities for over a decade.  She is also a Licensed Somatic Psychotherapist who works with individuals and groups to raise consciousness about how we relate to self, others and the greater human web.  She has worked in various social service settings with diverse, resilient and under-resourced communities, and previously co-led the Community Service Learning program at San Francisco University High School to support youth engaging in conscious service projects. Jackie believes that volunteerism is more than just giving back—it’s about growing greater self-awareness, connecting across difference and empowering local community members to grow a stronger global network together.
